Talpah, The Circumstances.

Brief
The goal was to create an audiovisual performance in collaboration with Talpah. The visuals, projected onto the back of the stage, were to function as a hub of entertainment for the audience. They wanted to create a set of visuals that would react in real time with the music produced and make the concert experience more immersive.
Problem
The difficulty was to construct scenes (3D Environments) to be cast and played along with the music. In addition to the technical aspect there was also the experiential aspect, for a live show of about an hour the scenes should not sound repetitive you wanted to build a story to accompany the entire live show in line with the songs played.

Analysis
Beyond the technicalities - Touchdesigner and storytelling

The project started by analyzing the set list of tracks chosen by Talpah for the live performance.

Through in-depth listening, perceptions/feelings were assigned to each track to be later translated into the visuals.

On this basis, the tracklist was divided into clusters of three tracks each, and each was matched with a scene that would be visualized during the live performance.

At this point, each scene was defined in more detail, describing the elements of the environment, the feelings to be conveyed, and the protagonists of the scene. Modalities for the transition from one scene to another were then defined and the storyline of the live show was structured. All the necessary assets were gathered, as well as the creation of specific moodboards for each scene. ‍

Finally, I moved on developing the live show, all within Touchdesigner. Some environments were designed generatively from scratch, while others were built by composing 3D models.

Solution
Audio-reactive and playable in real-time

To make the visuals audio-reactive, I connected to several parameters directly the midi signals that Talpah was sending me as it played the songs.

This way I could play with the 3D models and make them "pop" in real time, or with light levels, rather than instances of each scene or color filters.

I also connected an external midi keyboard, to which I attached different parameters that I could manage at will during the live performance.

Some buttons were used to change scenes, others to launch some special effects. With some knobs and sliders, on the other hand, it was possible to manage the intensity of some effects.

Final Consideration

The live show was appreciated by the audience in attendance, which increased during the duration of the live performance. Several appreciations were also provided by the other bands that played the same night, particularly Giant Swan and Sonambient.
